Lead daily oral reading with confidence through clear teaching guidance, vocabulary support, complete answers, and a ready-to-use reading schedule.
Newly revised and updated, the Catholic National Reader, Book 3 Teacher Guide supports parents and teachers as they work through the corresponding Student Reader. It includes teaching notes for families not using Kolbe Academy’s separate Course Plan, along with answers for all comprehension questions and language exercises in the Student Reader.
Lesson-by-lesson vocabulary notes explain difficult or antiquated words and phrases before students read. A four-quarter reading plan, guidance for oral instruction, quarterly exams, and complete exam keys make the guide a practical resource for planning, discussion, review, and assessment.

Support for Daily Oral Reading
The guide explains Kolbe Academy’s mutual-response approach: the teacher first reads while the student listens, then the student reads while the teacher listens. Hearing each selection before reading it independently helps prevent a cold reading and gives students a model of fluent, expressive language.
Because the reader’s language and sentence structure are intentionally challenging, the guide encourages instructors to adjust the pace when needed. Students may begin by reading shorter portions or the vocabulary at the beginning of a lesson while still benefiting from hearing the complete grade-level selection.
Lesson-by-Lesson Support
Each entry corresponds directly to the Student Reader and identifies the relevant page numbers. Vocabulary notes define unfamiliar language and clarify expressions that may be difficult for modern students, helping parents prepare before the reading begins.
Complete answers support efficient review of comprehension and language work. Depending on the student’s needs and the exercise, responses may be completed orally or in writing, allowing instructors to focus on reading growth without adding unnecessary writing demands.
Course Information
Third Grade Reading uses Catholic National Reader, Book 3 as its primary reader. The reading program is based on mutual response: teacher reading and student listening, followed by student reading while the teacher and other students listen.
Vocal reading skill is practiced and developed throughout the course, and the child should read aloud every day. The reader’s advanced vocabulary, varied genres, and increasingly complex sentence patterns help prepare students for the great works of Western civilization they will encounter later in their education.
