Built for Reading Aloud

Kolbe Academy’s Third Grade Reading program is built on mutual response: the teacher reads while the student listens, and the student reads while the teacher and others listen. Daily oral reading gives children regular practice in accuracy, expression, phrasing, and attentive listening.

The reader’s conversational style welcomes children into increasingly substantial selections. Vocabulary lists, phonics markings, and varied language exercises provide practical support as students gain fluency, confidence, and a deeper understanding of what they read.

A Rich Variety of Reading

Selections range from animal and nature studies to legends, history, poetry, practical knowledge, family life, and stories of courage and generosity. Students encounter subjects such as cotton, maize, sugar, coal, animals, Columbus, the hero of Johnstown, and wonders of the sea alongside literary and imaginative selections.

Catholic readings include the Legend of St. Christopher, St. Elizabeth, St. Germaine Cousin, St. Peter Claver, the Crib, and Our Lady’s Flower Society. Even when a lesson is not explicitly religious, the reader maintains a Catholic understanding of gratitude, duty, charity, sacrifice, and the dignity of others.

Course Information

Third Grade Reading uses Catholic National Reader, Book 3 as its primary reader. The program emphasizes mutual response: teacher reading and student listening, followed by student reading while the teacher and other students listen.

Oral reading skills are practiced and developed throughout the course, and students should read aloud each day. The book’s graduated selections, vocabulary support, phonics markings, comprehension questions, and language exercises provide a strong foundation for this daily practice.
