Literature 5 Activities Book Expansion Pack | 5th Grade Literature | Kolbe Academy Catholic Classical Curriculum

This additional activities book expands Kolbe Academy’s Grade 5 Catholic classical literature course for families using an Advanced 5 Reading Plan. It is also an essential resource for families building a customized Literature 5 course using titles of their choice from among Kolbe’s offerings. The expansion pack provides guided activities for eight additional novels and saint biographies, including discussion questions, reading checks, vocabulary practice, written responses, and creative projects.

Students deepen comprehension and literary analysis through Black Beauty, Carry On, Mr. Bowditch, Misty of Chincoteague, White Fang, A Wrinkle in Time, Mother Cabrini, Mother Seton and the Sisters of Charity, and St. Katharine Drexel. Catholic saint-biography units include faith-centered discussion and saint projects that encourage students to consider each saint’s life, virtues, and example.

Families following the standard Elementary 5 Reading Plan should use the regular Literature 5 Activities Book. This Expansion Pack is an additional resource for families who choose one of the Advanced 5 Reading Plans, which substitute select titles while maintaining a rich, coherent year of classical literature study.

Course Information

This Grade 5 literature course deepens comprehension and introduces more sustained literary analysis through a year of classic fiction, historical narrative, and adventure. Core readings include Island of the Blue Dolphins, Where the Red Fern Grows, My Side of the Mountain, Calico Captive, and The Hobbit. Students develop mature reading habits through guided discussion, regular reading checks, and written responses that support clear, organized thinking.

Poetry study is integrated throughout the year using our Classic Poems Across the Ages text and extends beyond recitation to include imagery, structure, and meaning. Students also complete structured journal work, paragraph practice, and projects. The course supports adaptable pacing, allowing instructors to adjust reading and writing workload as needed while preserving instructional coherence. Detailed lesson plans and teacher keys support both independent student growth and confident instruction.

Please use the Course Plan to confirm your assigned books and weekly work, as titles and pacing vary by plan. Families may change plans if needed; to avoid repeating material or disrupting the sequence, we recommend changing at a unit or quarter break.
