The Literature 5 Activities Book supports the core readings shared across Kolbe Academy’s Grade 5 Catholic classical literature course. It provides guided discussion questions, reading checks, vocabulary work, written responses, and projects for Island of the Blue Dolphins, Where the Red Fern Grows, My Side of the Mountain, Calico Captive, The Hobbit, Kateri Tekakwitha: Mohawk Maiden, and poetry from Classic Poems Across the Ages.

This book is used with the Elementary 5 Reading Plan and provides the shared core activities for both Advanced 5 Reading Plans. Students using an Advanced 5 Reading Plan also need the separately sold Literature 5 Activities Book Expansion Pack for activities connected to their additional reading titles.

Course Information

Literature 5 deepens comprehension and introduces more sustained literary analysis through classic fiction, historical narrative, adventure, animal stories, epic fantasy, poetry, and the lives of saints. Students strengthen mature reading habits through guided discussion, regular reading checks, and written responses that support clear, organized thinking.

Activities encourage students to attend to character, setting, conflict, theme, vocabulary, imagery, and meaning. Poetry study using Classic Poems Across the Ages extends beyond recitation to examine structure, meaning, and patterns of language.

The course includes three adaptable reading plans. Families should use the Course Plan to select books and weekly assignments because additional titles and pacing vary by plan. Students in either Advanced 5 plan should also use the Expansion Pack.

Literature 5 Reading Paths

This Activities Book supports the shared core readings. Titles used only in an Advanced 5 plan require the separately sold Expansion Pack. Refer to the Course Plan for exact pacing and assignments.
