Literature 5 Activities Book | 5th Grade Literature | Kolbe Academy Catholic Classical Curriculum

This activities book supports the core readings shared across Kolbe Academy’s Grade 5 Catholic classical literature course. It provides guided discussion questions, reading checks, vocabulary work, written responses, and projects for Island of the Blue Dolphins, Where the Red Fern Grows, My Side of the Mountain, Calico Captive, The Hobbit, and Classic Poems Across the Ages.

Through classic fiction, historical narrative, adventure, and poetry, students strengthen reading comprehension, develop more sustained literary analysis, and practice expressing thoughtful responses in writing. The activities encourage students to attend to character, setting, theme, vocabulary, imagery, and meaning while giving home instructors practical support for discussion and review.

This book is used with the Elementary 5 Reading Plan and provides the shared core activities for both Advanced 5 Reading Plans. Students using an Advanced 5 Reading Plan should also purchase the Literature 5 Activities Book Expansion Pack, which contains activities for the additional titles assigned in those plans.

Course Information

This Grade 5 literature course deepens comprehension and introduces more sustained literary analysis through a year of classic fiction, historical narrative, and adventure. Core readings include Island of the Blue Dolphins, Where the Red Fern Grows, My Side of the Mountain, Calico Captive, and The Hobbit. Students develop mature reading habits through guided discussion, regular reading checks, and written responses that support clear, organized thinking.

Poetry study is integrated throughout the year using our Classic Poems Across the Ages text and extends beyond recitation to include imagery, structure, and meaning. Students also complete structured journal work, paragraph practice, and projects. The course supports adaptable pacing, allowing instructors to adjust reading and writing workload as needed while preserving instructional coherence. Detailed lesson plans and teacher keys support both independent student growth and confident instruction.
