Redwall | Kolbe Academy Catholic Classical Curriculum
Redwall is an epic adventure set in a peaceful abbey where a community of woodland creatures lives by hospitality, work, and shared life. When the warlord Cluny the Scourge and his army threaten the abbey, the inhabitants must find a way to defend their home. A young novice mouse, Matthias, becomes unexpectedly drawn into the struggle as he searches for the lost sword of the legendary Martin the Warrior.
As danger grows, the community relies on courage, cooperation, and ingenuity rather than strength alone. Matthias’s journey beyond the abbey walls leads him through forests, rivers, and riddles, gradually teaching him that true heroism is rooted in perseverance and service to others.
The novel presents a sustained quest with multiple characters and interwoven events, helping students track conflict, motivation, and consequence across a longer narrative. Themes of leadership, loyalty, and sacrificial courage support thoughtful discussion and written response. Selected for upper elementary readers, Redwall strengthens reading stamina and interpretive skills within a classical literature program.
