Pliny: 20 Letters and Suggested Companion Texts is designed to support the AP Latin curriculum by providing the required Latin letters of Pliny along with additional readings that place them in a broader historical context. The volume presents the original Latin text with helpful vocabulary and notes on the same page, allowing students to focus on translation and interpretation without constant reference to outside materials.
Brief introductions to each letter explain historical background, literary style, and key themes. Additional selections from other Latin authors and historical sources help students better understand Roman society, government, and daily life during the early Empire, reinforcing the cultural setting of Pliny’s correspondence.
This text serves as a primary course reader, supporting translation practice, discussion, and literary analysis while preparing students for close reading of Latin prose.
Course Information
This course focuses on an in-depth study of selections from two of the greatest works in Latin literature: Vergil's Aeneid and Caesar's Gallic War. Students will be required to prepare and translate assigned readings and place these texts in a meaningful, Catholic context. This will come through accurate translation, paying special attention to the grammar and stylistic nuances of the specific authors, as well as broader class discussions. Throughout the course, students will also translate and discuss passages stemming from other relevant Classical and Christian Latin sources.
