Kateri Tekakwitha: Mohawk Maiden recounts the life of the young Native American woman known as the “Lily of the Mohawks,” who lived in seventeenth-century North America during the early years of missionary activity among the Iroquois peoples. Orphaned as a child and marked by illness, Kateri grew up in a village where Christianity was often distrusted. Through the witness of missionaries and her own quiet search for truth, she chose to be baptized and live as a Christian despite misunderstanding and opposition from those around her.

The biography follows her perseverance in prayer, her charity toward others, and her determination to remain faithful in difficult circumstances. Leaving her home to practice her faith freely, she embraced a life of simplicity, sacrifice, and devotion to Christ while remaining within the ordinary duties of daily life.

This Grade 5 literature course deepens comprehension and introduces more sustained literary analysis through a year of classic fiction, historical narrative, and adventure. Core readings include Island of the Blue Dolphins, Where the Red Fern Grows, My Side of the Mountain, Calico Captive, and The Hobbit. Students develop mature reading habits through guided discussion, regular reading checks, and written responses that support clear, organized thinking.

Poetry study is integrated throughout the year using our Classic Poems Across the Ages text and extends beyond recitation to include imagery, structure, and meaning.
