Reading & Literature 1 introduces young students to reading as a natural and joyful way of learning. Using carefully selected texts—including Catholic National Readers, classic fairy tales, saint stories, and beloved literary works—this course strengthens phonics skills while steadily developing vocabulary and reading comprehension.

Students participate in guided and independent reading, listen to classic literature read aloud, and practice retelling stories in their own words. Poetry is included to develop patterns of language, enrich vocabulary, and strengthen memory and expression.

Through exposure to good literature, students learn to identify characters, follow simple plots, recognize details, and discern the moral or purpose of a story. Emphasis is placed on reading aloud with confidence, completing books, and fostering a lasting love of reading.
