Calico Captive | 5th Grade Literature | Kolbe Academy Catholic Classical Curriculum

Calico Captive is a historical novel set during the French and Indian War and based on the real account of a young colonial girl taken from her New Hampshire home. When Miriam Willard is captured in a raid and forced to travel north through the wilderness, she must endure hunger, cold, and uncertainty while separated from the life she expected.

Arriving in Montreal, Miriam encounters a new culture, language, and set of customs very different from her own. As she adjusts to her circumstances, she faces difficult questions about loyalty, prejudice, and identity. Her experiences challenge her assumptions and gradually form a deeper understanding of both courage and charity.

Drawing from an original captivity narrative, the book introduces students to early American history through personal experience rather than distant events. The sustained narrative supports careful reading and discussion while encouraging reflection on perseverance, cultural encounter, and moral choice. Selected for fifth-grade readers, Calico Captive strengthens comprehension and written response while helping students consider the human dimension of historical conflict.
