Black Beauty | 5th Grade Literature | Kolbe Academy Catholic Classical Curriculum
Black Beauty is the story of a horse who recounts his own life from a gentle beginning in the English countryside through a series of owners of very different character. As Beauty is bought and sold, he experiences both kindness and hardship, learning that the treatment of animals often reflects the virtue or selfishness of the people who care for them.
Through Beauty’s changing circumstances, readers encounter the responsibilities that accompany authority and the moral consequences of cruelty, impatience, and neglect. The narrative invites sympathy for the vulnerable while also presenting examples of compassion, duty, and stewardship.
Written as a continuous first-person account, the novel encourages attentive reading and reflection on character and moral choice. Selected for fifth-grade readers, Black Beauty supports discussion and written response while helping students consider how ordinary actions reveal habits of virtue and care for creation within a classical literature program.
