White Fang tells the story of a wolf-dog growing up in the harsh wilderness of the far North. Born among wild animals and later drawn into the world of human ownership, White Fang encounters both cruelty and kindness, and his behavior is shaped by the treatment he receives. Through hardship, danger, and gradual trust, he learns to move from fear and violence toward loyalty and companionship.

Set against the realities of frontier life, the novel explores how character is formed through environment, discipline, and care. The contrast between harsh masters and just ones invites reflection on responsibility, authority, and the power of patient training to restore what has been damaged.

Written as a sustained narrative of survival and growth, the book encourages attentive reading and discussion while helping students consider themes of justice, mercy, and the formation of habits. Selected for fifth-grade readers, White Fang strengthens comprehension and written response while offering a thoughtful study of nature, human influence, and the possibility of change.

Course Information

This Grade 5 literature course deepens comprehension and introduces more sustained literary analysis through a year of classic fiction, historical narrative, and adventure. Core readings include Island of the Blue Dolphins, Where the Red Fern Grows, My Side of the Mountain, Calico Captive, and The Hobbit. Students develop mature reading habits through guided discussion, regular reading checks, and written responses that support clear, organized thinking.

Poetry study is integrated throughout the year using our Classic Poems Across the Ages text and extends beyond recitation to include imagery, structure, and meaning. Students also complete structured journal work, paragraph practice, and projects. The course supports adaptable pacing, allowing instructors to adjust reading and writing workload as needed while preserving instructional coherence. Detailed lesson plans and teacher keys support both independent student growth and confident instruction.
