Island of the Blue Dolphins | 5th Grade Literature | Kolbe Academy Catholic Classical Curriculum
Island of the Blue Dolphins tells the story of Karana, a young girl left alone on a remote island off the California coast after her people depart and she makes the sudden decision to remain behind. With no one to rely on but her own resourcefulness, she learns to build shelter, gather food, craft tools, and defend herself against the dangers of the natural world.
Over time her struggle for survival becomes something deeper. As the years pass, Karana forms an unexpected companionship with the animals around her and begins to see the island not only as a place of hardship but also of beauty and order. Her experiences invite reflection on courage, patience, stewardship, and the interior strength that develops through solitude.
Written in clear, reflective prose, the novel presents a sustained narrative drawn from historical events and encourages careful reading and discussion. Selected for fifth-grade readers, it strengthens comprehension and written response while introducing themes of perseverance, responsibility, and respect for creation within a classical literature program.
