The Hobbit tells the story of Bilbo Baggins, a comfort-loving hobbit whose orderly life is interrupted when the wizard Gandalf arrives with a company of dwarves seeking help on a dangerous journey. Though reluctant and unsure of himself, Bilbo is drawn into an unexpected adventure across forests, mountains, and underground passages filled with goblins, wolves, and other perils.

As the quest unfolds, Bilbo’s role changes from unwilling companion to thoughtful participant. Through riddles, narrow escapes, and moments requiring judgment rather than strength, he learns courage, prudence, and responsibility. His encounter with the dragon Smaug becomes a turning point that reveals the importance of wisdom, restraint, and loyalty.

Written in rich narrative style, the novel presents a sustained fantasy journey that rewards attentive reading and discussion. Selected for fifth-grade readers, The Hobbit strengthens comprehension and interpretive thinking while introducing students to themes of friendship, moral choice, and the use of power within a classic work of imaginative literature.

Course Information

This Grade 5 literature course deepens comprehension and introduces more sustained literary analysis through a year of classic fiction, historical narrative, and adventure. Core readings include Island of the Blue Dolphins, Where the Red Fern Grows, My Side of the Mountain, Calico Captive, and The Hobbit. Students develop mature reading habits through guided discussion, regular reading checks, and written responses that support clear, organized thinking.

Poetry study is integrated throughout the year using our Classic Poems Across the Ages text and extends beyond recitation to include imagery, structure, and meaning. Students also complete structured journal work, paragraph practice, and projects. The course supports adaptable pacing, allowing instructors to adjust reading and writing workload as needed while preserving instructional coherence. Detailed lesson plans and teacher keys support both independent student growth and confident instruction.
