The Old Man and the Sea is a beautiful novella about an old fisherman, Santiago, who aspires to land his biggest catch before he dies. He has endured eighty-five days of bad luck, his ventures out to sea have provided him with nothing and he has lost his useful and admiring apprentice. He sets out to sea and travels further than usual into the Gulf Stream. He sets bait deep in the water and hooks a twenty foot long Marlin. If he makes it back to Cuba safely with the marlin, it would pay for his retirement.
